Brockhampton Medieval Manor

Brockhampton - a Medieval Moated Manor House

Brockhampton Estate is a delightful National Trust property in Herefordshire - only 10 miles from Worcester. Its main feature is a timber framed manor house that dates back to the 15th century, which is almost completely surrounded by a beautiful moat (on 3 sides). You have to go through the newly restored gate house, to get to the house itself - a beautiful medieval building especially in the summertime when it is surrounded by colourful flowers and lilies on the water.

The house was built in 1425 for John Dumbleton, and over the years each generation of the family has altered the building to suit its own needs - starting with adding an upper floor for bedrooms thus reducing the size of the Great Medieval Hall.  In the 18th century the family had a new grander house built at the top of the estate and the timber framed house became home to various estate workers. This is what the inside of the house looks like - there is far more to it than I expected. It is full of character and charm.

On the far side of the house, just over the moat, you can see the remains of the ancient Norman chapel.

There is a delightful courtyard with a National Trust shop, selling unusual items, as well as The Granary which serves takeaway light lunches, hot and cold drinks and ice creams. Apart from the outdoor seats, most of the indoor seating can only be reached by going up a steep staircase. There is another tea room open in busy periods - The Old Apple Store. There is a wonderful second-hand bookshop close to the courtyard - it is definitely worth a look!

There are many information boards (which are of interest to grown ups as well as children), in the courtyard.

I loved this old Fire Engine.

The house is surrounded by 1000 acres of farmland and 700 acres of woodland - so there are plenty of opportunities to do some walking whist visiting the estate. You can park at the top of the estate, but only if you fancy the long walk down and back up again - there is plenty of parking at Lower Brockhampton which is very close the the Manor house and all the facilities.
