Lincoln Castle and DH Lawrence Centre

The Poppies at Lincoln Castle

Go and see the Poppy Wave at Lincoln Castle - it is a spectacular sight especially on a sunny day. The sculptures are by artists Paul Cummins and Tom Piper and are to mark the centenary of the First World War. The wave is a sweeping arch of over 5000 handmade ceramic poppy heads suspended on varying size towering stalks. They were on display in the Tower of London in 2014 and they are at Lincoln until 4th September.

It is free to get into the Castle to see them - but if you pay to walk around the Medieval Walls you get the better view. It is hard not to get people in your photos - but if you go early you stand more chance of the perfect photo.

Seen from the ground it is completely different :-

There are other displays about the war in the castle and at the cathedral - that is where I spotted this poem and picture :-

Anyone who is interested in Literature, Nottingham history or even how people lived 100 years ago should visit the D.H.Lawrence Birthplace museum.

There are several guided tours everyday by the wonderfully informative staff (who I cannot praise enough). They are so knowledgeable on the life of the Lawrence family.

As well as seeing a well kept Victorian house, you can enjoy a film show all about his life.

There are so many informative posters to read - here are a few:-

I found it particularly interesting that no one actually knows where he is buried. It is a pity that it wasn't back in Nottingham.

After the tour, the shop is well worth a visit. As well as books and DVDs, there are lots of old fashioned toys and other items to buy - all at very reasonable prices.

They are selling a range of Whitworth Classic D.H. Lawrence's novels at only £2.50 - I just had a get a few more!!!

You can also get a cuppa and something to eat there or at the cafe opposite.

I can highly recommend visiting and it will be a few hours well spent. I certainly learnt a lot in the 2 hours I was there.

D.H Lawrence - one of Nottinghamshire's great literary genius's.
