Papplewick - A Victorian Pumping Station

Papplewick Pumping Station

A glorious day out at Papplewick Pumping Station - known as Britain's finest Victorian Water Works.
Check its website to see when its special steam events are going to be on, as this is normally when you can book to go on a guided tour to see the Underground Reservoir.

The ornamental cooling pond is quite spectacular as you first walk into the grounds.

The building that you enter through and pay at, is the Superintendent's House, and there is a small shop there as well as lots of information and leaflets. There is a room here where you can book to go on the walking tour of the Underground reservoir - it only costs £2.00.

The Engine house is a beautiful Victorian building that contains original twin beam engines, built by James Watt and Co. in1884. The features inside the building, as well as the engines and other machines, are so ornate - who would expect stained glass windows, polished mahogany and elaborate columns in an old steam room.

Through the back of the Engine House you come to the Boiler house, with 6 Lancashire boilers - still being stoked today.

Outside  in the old stables there are several different workshops to investigate ..............

I loved the blacksmith's shop........................

Linby Colliery Winding Engine House.

Then it was time to go on the walking tour to the 1879 Underground Reservoir. You are put into a specifically timed group of no more than 20 people and have to walk the 3/4 mile up to the entrance of the reservoir. Sometimes there is bus available - so check before you go, if you don't think you will be able to walk that far. It is easier coming back down!

The guides are so knowledgeable and tell you so much about the history of the place. It really is quite a remarkable feat of engineering - given the time that it was built.

Back to the main area, where you will find the gardens (a craft fair, a Punch and Judy show and other events on Special Days), a Miniature Railway, a woodland play area, picnic areas, a cafe and the delightful Cooling Lake to wander around.

It is most definitely worth a day out - so look out for the special steam days happening.

Thank you,

Lynne
